Australia A-League -- Melbourne Victory  VS  Brisbane Roar

Melbourne Victory have some issues in defence with James Donachie banned after his red card against the Newcastle Jets. Skipper Carl Valeri is fit again after a hamstring complaint.

Brisbane Roar have a long list of outs due to injury.

Injured/unavailable: Brett Holman, Luke DeVere (both knee); Stefan Mauk (groin), Jack Hingert (anterior cruciate ligament), Connor O’Toole (leg), Dane Ingham (foot)

Third-placed Melbourne Victory have slipped ten points behind leaders Perth Glory, but more importantly for them, they are also four points behind second-placed Sydney FC as they chase a second chance with a top two finish. Victory have only managed two points from their past four league games, with their latest league fixture two weeks ago ending in a 2-0 defeat against the Newcastle Jets on neutral ground. With a midweek trip to Japan in the AFC Champions League, which ended in a 2-1 defeat against Sanfrecce Hiroshima, this won’t be as simple as it seems.

Ninth-placed Brisbane Roar were humbled 4-1 at home in the last round by the eighth-placed Western Sydney Wanderers and it seems their season is set to fizzle out, having avoided the wooden spoon. They have won two of their past four league games, losing the other two, but they have also shipped 16 goals in their past five league matches.

This is a potential banana skin, but Melbourne Victory need to get back on track and will do enough at home against a Brisbane Roar side with little to play for.

Brisbane Roar’s leaky defence, combined with the fact they have conceded nine times in their past two league meetings with Melbourne Victory, suggests there will be plenty of total goals in this one. Melbourne Victory have a free scoring forward line and with Ola Toivonen and Keisuka Honda both fully fit again, they may take their recent woes out on Brisbane Roar.

Melbourne Victory have won their past two league meetings. However, bizarrely, the respective away side has won the past four league clashes, with Melbourne Victory registering three victories and Brisbane Roar one.
