MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Third-placed Melbourne Victory went down 2-1 to second-placed Sydney FC in the last round, leaving them four points behind their old rivals and off the pace for a top two spot. However, they will retain hope, given Sydney still play leaders Perth Glory. Victory had won two league matches on the trot prior to last round’s loss to the Sky Blues. They were unsuccessful in the AFC Champions League in midweek, losing 4-0 away at Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande.

The last-placed Central Coast Mariners were humbled 3-0 at home by leaders Perth Glory in the last round of the Australian top flight, meaning they have now lost their past two league games, after a brief boost following Alen Stajcic’s appointment as caretaker manager knocked off rivals Newcastle Jets 3-2. The Mariners have actually collected only four points from their past ten league matches and it is hard to see them improve that record.

I’m backing Melbourne Victory at home.

SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST HALF HAD - DRAW

Melbourne Victory have been drawing at half time in ten of their 24 league matches. The Central Coast Mariners have not managed to lead at the break in their last five league fixtures and I’m not expecting miracles from them here. I think Victory will be a tad sluggish early, with the first 45 minutes seeing the two sides draw.

HEAD TO HEAD

Melbourne Victory have won their past three league encounters and are unbeaten across their past 17 league clashes with the Central Coast Mariners, winning 13 and drawing four.
