Pumas UNAM beat Tigres UANL to qualify for the semi-finals of the league playoffs with a 4-3 aggregate win. The hosts claimed a 3-1 home victory in the return leg. After an uneventful first half, Carlos Gonzalez opened the scoring for Pumas UNAM with a header in the 52nd minute. Rafael de Souza Carioca levelled three minutes later but goals from Felipe Mora and Gustavo Alustiza were enough to secure the win for Pumas UNAM. After outperforming expectations by finishing third during the regular league stage, David Patino’s side have now earned their place in the last four. The club have not won the title since 2011. However, the well-drilled and compact side could represent a formidable challenge to any of the remaining teams in the tournament.

CF America qualified for the semi-finals with a 5-4 win over Toluca on aggregate as the club claimed a 3-2 home victory in a difficult return leg last weekend. The hosts had less possession and shots on target than Toluca, despite playing much of the match against ten men after Rodrigo Salinas was given a red card in the 51st minute. However, goals from Roger Martinez, Bruno Valdez and Paul Aguilar proved enough for CF America. The hosts subsequently conceded to Rubens Sambueza and William Fernando but were able to hold on for the victory. Although the shaky performance is unlikely to provide a confidence boost for CF America as they enter the semi-finals, the team will be happy to face Pumas UNAM in their next fixture. Miguel Herrera’s side claimed a comfortable 6-2 aggregate win over their Mexico City rivals when the teams met in the Clausura 2018 playoffs.

CF America are the clear favourites to qualify here and I expect them to secure the victory in the first leg of this playoff semi-final. Miguel Herrera’s side were unbeaten in their past five away matches during the regular league stage (three wins, two draws). In contrast, Pumas UNAM closed the season with a mixed home record, claiming just one win, while registering three draws and one loss. Given that record, I think a victory for the visitors is the most likely outcome.

CF America opened the scoring in ten of their 17 matches in the league stage this season. Meanwhile, Pumas UNAM netted the opening goal in just eight of their 17 league contests. They were even less likely to score first at home, striking the opener in just three of their eight regular home league matches. Given those facts, I'm backing CF America to score first in this match.

CF America have won five and drawn two of their past seven encounters in the regular league stage and playoffs. The teams played to a 2-2 draw when they last met in the league in August.
