Argentine Division 1 -- San Martin Tucuman VS Newells Old Boys

San Martin Tucuman boss Walter Coyette will be missing Maximiliano Martinez as the left back collected his fifth yellow card at Atletico Tucuman last time out.

Newell’s Old Boys left back Mariano Bittolo had to be substituted against Patronato last weekend due to a muscle problem and is a doubt here, as is Hernan Bernardello, who continues to recover from an ankle injury. Winger Joel Amoroso remains sidelined.

San Martin Tucuman

Suspended: Maximiliano Martinez

Doubtful: Alvaro Fernandez (ankle)

Injured/unavailable: Lucas Diarte (knee ligament rupture)

Newell’s Old Boys

Suspended: None

Doubtful: Hernan Bernardello (ankle), Mariano Bittolo (muscle)

Injured/unavailable: Joel Amoroso, Alfio Oviedo, Brian Sarmiento (all muscle); Leandro Grimi (knee)

San Martin Tucuman stopped a negative streak of three winless league games (two draws, one loss) in the best possible way last time out: After trailing 2-0 in the 47th minute, they reversed the score to beat arch-rivals Atletico Tucuman 3-2 away from home in a local derby. That result allowed El Ciruja to climb out of the relegation zone for the first time in the whole season. San Martin, who plied their trade in the second division last season, are currently on 16 points and remain unbeaten at home, with two successes and five draws.

Thanks to Hector Fertoli’s goal in the second half, Newell’s Old Boys broke a three-game winless run (one draw, two defeats) by beating Patronato 1-0 at home in interim boss Hector Bidoglio’s debut last weekend. However, overall, it has been a poor campaign for the team, having accumulated 15 points so far. Furthermore, La Lepra are the worst away side in the league, having registered only a single draw and six defeats(one of the matches played on neutral ground).

San Martin Tucuman should be boosted by their recent derby victory while Newell’s are very weak on their travels. I predict a home win.

San Martin Tucuman have scored an average of one home goal this season while Newell’s Old Boys have scored only a single goal in all their away league games this season. I expect the hosts to win 1-0.

San Martin Tucuman have beaten Newell’s Old Boys in their only two league meetings: They registered a 2-0 home victory and a 1-0 success in Rosario in 2008-09.
