MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Stabaek had a troublesome campaign in Norway’s top flight and an escape from relegation was their primary objective for some time, but they ended up finishing the regular season in 14th place. Henning Berg arrived in July in order to steady the ship, but his job was a difficult one. The club won just one of their final six regular home league matches, drawing three and losing two while in their most recent outing, a 2-2 draw at home in a relegation six-pointer against Stromsgodset, they were cruelly denied a win with the last kick. Nevertheless, it was enough to leapfrog Start in the table and secure this relegation playoff spot. One positive has been Franck Boli's goals. He has 17 league strikes to his name and is not only the club’s top scorer but also the league’s leading marksman.

Aalesund won just three of their last seven regular league fixtures (one draw, three defeats) and they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion despite winning 1-0 on the final day at Strommen in the second division. That victory did at least ensure they entered the playoffs in good form. A 1-0 home win over Nest Sotra in the promotion playoffs followed, a result that guaranteed a game against Sogndal in the playoff final. Aalesund didn’t disappoint, duly dispatching them 3-1 with goals from Holmbert Fridjonsson and a double from Pape Habib Gueye. The former of those scorers was Aalesund’s top scorer in addition to being the league’s second-top scorer with 19 goals.

Berg’s men were unlucky not to pick up all three points against Stromsgodset in their last home league game of the regular season and they will be keen to give the home fans something to cheer about as they look to take a lead into the second leg. Aalesund can be a resilient outfit as they have shown on numerous occasions this season while an in-form Fridjonsson could be their best chance of taking anything here. Taking everything into account, I will predict a home win.

SECOND PREDICTION: ODD/EVEN – ODD

I think this playoff tie will be a tightly contested affair but one that the hosts can edge by the odd goal. Five of Stabaek’s six regular league wins have resulted in odd scorelines and I expect the same here.

HEAD TO HEAD

When these clubs last met in the top flight in September last year, it was a 1-1 draw at the Color Line Stadium in Alesund. Five months prior to that fixture, Stabaek romped to a 3-1 league victory in Baerum.
