TEAM NEWS

Vissel Kobe ignored David Villa's groin strain that I reported last week, and judged him fit enough to start, but he had to be replaced before half time. He should be considered doubtful (again). Lukas Podolski is reported as having a foot injury, but no details are forthcoming. Also doubtful. Vissel played a reserve team on Wednesday night in the League Cup and won 2-0 at home to Oita Trinita on goals from Wellington and Junya Tanaka.

Sanfrecce still miss Takuta Hayashi is still on the injury list but with no explanation at all since the start of the season. Sho Inagaki was deemed fit to start in the Asian Champions League victory – 2-0 at home - over Daegu on Wednesday night.

MATCH PREVIEW ?MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Vissel were 2-0 down to a hard-working, chance-taking Matsumoto Yamaga before half time, before taking hold of the game. Wellington replaced and injured David Villa and had a goal disallowed before heading home to make it 2-1 but Vissel were defeated. For the second time this season Vissel absolutely dominated play but were let down by finishing (and bad luck, strange refereeing decisions in this case!) and they should not worry too much about tactics but more on being decisive in front of goal. Manager Lillo also has to decide who are the best starting players, since both Dankler at centre back and Sergi Samper in midfield could well be less-talented than the players they are replacing right now! As I said before, the manager must be the key and they need to bounce back from defeat.

Sanfrecce started with two lightning strikes from Yoshifumi Kashiwa and Kosei Shibasaki within 7 minutes of the start and then held off the pressure of Gamba before adding a late goal on the break from Hayao Kawabe. The win took them to the top of J1 on goal difference. They are unexciting for most of the game – as they were last week -but manage to finish chances that they get – the difference between them and their hosts today, for example – but, just as I told you last season when they were 13 points clear at the top of J1, they are not going to win anything this season. They are defensive and negative for the most part, dirty at times, and manage Hiroshi Jofuku is not averse to playing eight or nine defensive players when a lead is gained – which, of course, is understandable, but it rarely, in the end, brings any reward.

Vissel know that they must get something from this match after losing last week when they could have, should have, moved up into the top three. A win against the leaders will be a big step to proving that they have the quality to win something this season and with home advantage and key man Kyogo Furuhashi supplying the chances, as he did last weekend, Vissel can surely break down a defence that has conceded only one goal this season.

SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST HALF HAD - HOME WIN

I feel that Vissel players will be under pressure to score early and take a lead that will then give them confidence to score more as Sanfrecce are forced out of their defensive mode. Vissel will know what they need to do and there are players who know they must score or drop out, and those – like Wellington and Junya Tanaka – who want to score to stay in, if given the chance. Early start for Vissel leading to a win.

HEAD TO HEAD

In J1 matches between these two teams last season Sanfrecce won at home and drew away.
