Atlas claimed a 2-1 away win against Monarcas Morelia last weekend in a league match in which they dominated possession and had more shots on target than their opponents. The visitors netted the opening goal thanks to a right-foot strike from Jesus Isijara in the 62nd minute. Although Gaston Lezcano levelled for Monarcas Morelia 18 minutes later, Facundo Barcelo scored a close-range winner for Atlas in the 85th minute. Guillermo Hoyos’ side now have an impressive haul of ten points from three wins, one draw and a loss. The team have returned from the winter break with new energy and organisation. Currently at fourth place in the table, Atlas will certainly hope to qualify for the playoffs this time around.

Puebla were thrashed 4-1 at home against Necaxa last weekend despite opening the scoring with a left-foot strike from Vladimir Lorona in the eighth minute. The hosts conceded a goal to Angel Sepulveda five minutes later, followed by a double for Brian Fernandez and an injury-time strike from Facundo Castro. The expulsion of Puebla’s Lucas Cavallini in the 95th minute was another blow for the club and could hamper their chances in the upcoming league fixture against Atlas. EnriqueMeza’s side currently have just five points from their opening five league games and are 14th in the league table. A dramatic turnaround is needed if they are to rescue their campaign this season.

Given their current form, I am picking Atlas to take all three points from this league game. The team have only lost once this term, in a tightly contested league match against defending champions CF America. In contrast, Puebla have only won one of their league games – against relegation contenders Veracruz – this season and will not have the home advantage in this league contest.

Atlas have scored an average of two goals in their five league fixtures this season, whereas Puebla have conceded an average of two goals in their two most recent league encounters. Given that form, a 2-0 home victory could well be on the cards.

Atlas have won two and lost one of their four most recent league encounters against Puebla, drawing one. However, the hosts claimed a 2-0 win over Atlas when the teams last met in the league in August.
